First for Europe in Dutch ports
Rotterdam, 4 May 2010 – As of 4 May, Rotterdam and Amsterdam are making exportin containers via their ports easier, more reliable and more transparent. From thid date on, exporters ans activities. Unlike in the pat, compagnies can de sure that Custons wil Validate their export declarations quickly and in a'watertight' manner, making VAT problems a thing of the past.
The two Dutch ports are the first in Europe to offer this kind of export service. It is estimated that 5,000 exporters and forwarders all over the EU will benefit from this significant improvement to their logistics processes. Some of the first participants include large companies like Schenker International, DHL, Gaston Schul, Rockwool and AkzoNobel. Every year, more than 2 million containers leave the European Union via the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Rotterdam and Amsterdam are organising the new package of export services for the container sector via Portbase, the joint Port Community System for the two ports. Together with the port business community, Portbase has sought a solution for the extra Customs obligations in the Dutch ports that have arisen from the European Export Control System (ECS), resulting in the so-called ECS services. Besides offering a solution for the new Customs obligations, these services also offer the above-mentioned advantages. All an exporter or forwarder needs to do is to electronically submit five basic items of information about his/her cargo. The service is free of charge: the port business community and the port authorities are covering the usage costs for the ECS services.
The export services offered to exporters and forwarders by Rotterdam and Amsterdam have been embraced by all container terminals and shipping companies in the two ports. Customs is also participating wholeheartedly.
